I hate the phrase "write what you know"

I know I just broke a few hearts by saying that, but I had too. For too many years, I have heard this phrase being kicked around, "write what you know" and I have to's dumb. Writing allows us to explore different things that we don't have access too and play with it.

I never write what I am "suppose to know". By defining such limiting spaces, how can we discover other personas and other sides of ourselves. I dare you to write in a voice that is not yours.

Instead of saying, "write what you know" say, "write what you want to know"

end rant
